120 electric buses manufactured by BYD were put into use in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia recently. BYD delivered a total of 470 electric buses to Bogotá this year, of which 397 were produced by BYD Nanjing.
“The electric buses delivered to Bogota are equipped with humanized configurations such as assistance systems for getting on and off the bus for the handicapped, on-board WIFI, mobile phone charging USB ports, and smart bus systems.” The person in charge of the Nanjing branch of BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. said in an interview. After the electric bus was shipped to the port of Buenaventura, Colombia, it took more than a month to travel across the ocean to Bogotá.
BYD Nanjing Branch is located in Binhuai Avenue, Lishui Economic Development Zone, and its main products are pure electric buses. It is reported that the company started producing Colombian orders in May this year, and delivered 397 units in two batches in July and September.
Nanjing-made electric buses showcased China’s new AFV technology. It is reported that the vehicles put into operation in Bogota include two models of 12 meters and 9 meters, with a single charge of more than 300 kilometers, which can meet the daily operating mileage of 260 kilometers. It is estimated that these battery-only buses will reduce the emissions of 12,500 tons of carbon dioxide and 2.5 tons of dust particles each year compared with diesel buses.
Ecological protection makes BYD electric buses very popular. According to the relevant person in charge of BYD, the company entered the Colombian market in 2012. Since the establishment of the first pure electric taxi fleet in South America in 2013, the sales of electric buses have continued to increase since 2018. 470 pure electric buses have just been delivered, and BYD has won an order for 406 buses from Bogota. All of them will be put into operation in 2021. By then, Bogota will have 889 pure electric buses, of which 876 will come from BYD, accounting for more than 98.5%.

The production and sales of new energy vehicles in the Chinese market have ranked first in the world for five consecutive years. The city is also seizing the opportunity and arranging first to build four new energy automobile industry bases in the city.
The relevant person in charge of the Lishui Economic Development Zone introduced that the Lishui Base, one of the four major new energy automobile industry bases, has been deploying the new energy automobile industry since 2012. It has gathered 6 companies including BYD, Jinlong, Changan, Yinlong, Hengtian, and Kaiwo. Complete vehicle companies, selected as the National Torch Characteristic Industrial Base, have concentrated more than 80% of the production capacity of new energy buses and more than 70% of the supporting capacity of new energy auto parts in Nanjing.
At present, there are more than 10 new energy vehicle companies and nearly 1,000 auto parts supporting companies in the city. According to statistics, in 2019, the city’s new energy automobile industry achieved an output value of 50 billion yuan, and the output of complete vehicles exceeded 70,000, ranking first in the province.
