300 Chinese sturgeons and 4000 cochineal fish, a national second-class protected animal, were released Wednesday morning into the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River.
Wednesday marks the second anniversary of the implementation of the Yangtze River Protection Law.
The 300 Chinese sturgeons released Wednesday were bred through artificial breeding in October 2021. At present, they are 15 months old with their size ranging from 50 cm to 80 cm.
Quoted Liao Xiaolin, researcher of Institute of Water Engineering Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Water Resources as saying that, the Chinese sturgeon is an animal placed under first-class protection on the national list. Originally, the Chinese sturgeon grew up in the sea and bred in the Yangtze River. In July of each year, the Chinese sturgeon entered the Gezhouba Dam of the Yangtze River from the sea. The Chinese sturgeon spawning ground has too few Chinese sturgeon. In these five years, there are less than 20 fish a year. So they have increased the efforts of proliferation and release, supplemented the quantity of natural resources, protected it and saved it through artificial means.
300 Chinese sturgeons, from the Institute of Water Engineering Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Water Resources, are released to Nanjing section of the Yangtze River for the first time. Together with 4000 cochineal fish, an animal placed under second-class protection on the national list, they will replenish the population of rare aquatic organisms in the Yangtze River and maintain the ecological balance of the Yangtze River.
Each released Chinese sturgeon is implanted with a “PIT” mark on its back, which is equivalent to its ID card. At present, China is establishing a reporting system for rare aquatic species such as Chinese sturgeon after being mistakenly captured. Through the “PIT” mark, the information of each mistakenly captured Chinese sturgeon can be traced.
